Independent theater artists Mary Tuomanen and Aaron Cromie collaborate on their first full-length theatrical work, The Body Lautrec, which will explore the life of French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The piece will be a meditation on the painter’s work, which equated the vulgar with the sublime, as well as on Toulouse-Lautrec’s own body, deformed by childhood falls caused by a bone disorder. Tuomanen will take on the role of director for the first time, and Cromie will perform as Toulouse-Lautrec alongside an ensemble of four female performers. The resulting work, devised in collaborative workshops, will bring the music and dance of late 19th-century Paris to life in a premiere performance at the 2014 FringeArts Festival. The Mütter Museum served as the venue for a work-in-progress showing in April 2013 as well as resource for dramaturgical research.

Generously funded by the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage and The Jim Henson Foundation.
